Well today was the last day of the Olympics. And personally, I am going to miss them. Summer or Winter, I could sit there and watch the Olympics all day. I wish that we didn't have to go back to NHL or different teams and just compete as countries. I love that everyone gets behind their athletes and they all unite. No Flames fan vs. Edmonton fans, or Rangers vs. The Red Wings. Everyone cheering for their own country and its awesome! Today in the final event of the Olympics the Canadian mens Hockey team took on the mens team from the USA. These 2 teams met on US soil in Salt Lake City in 2002 and they had already met once in these Olympics and Canada had fallen on their own soil to the US. In Salt Lake City Canada women's and mens hockey teams beat the US in the Gold Medal Games. I remember watching with my family, I was in 10th grade and we cheered so loud my throat hurt the next day. Earlier in the games when the US took on Canada we went back to the same place we had watched before at my parents house with the family and again, we screamed and cheered and yelled so much and so loud my throat was sore. But the Canadian team fell to the US 5-3. Canada had to win every single game they played from their on out to even have a shot at the Gold Medal Game on their home soil. Germany first - win....... Russia next - win........... Then Slovakia - win...............
All of these leading up to the Gold Medal Game.
Stats in these Olympics said that in 26 out of 29 games the team that scored first ended up winning. The whole first period was scoreless. And in the second period Toews from the Canadian team got a rebounded shot and put it back in to score the first goal of the game against the almost always unstoppable US goalie Ryan Miller.
IT REALLY WAS SUCH A GOOD GAME!!!!!
I wish I was there...
That sign sums it up perfectly especially on this day. Because as the stats suggested, Canada scored the first goal and Canada ended up winning the GOLD MEDAL with a score of 3-2 in Overtime!!! The Canadian women also beat the US earlier in the week for the Gold with a shut out of 2-0! Hockey is Canada's Game!
Canada came in 3rd in overall medal standings behind the US and Germany. But, in these Olympic Games Canada set a record for the most gold medals won by a single team in the Winter Olympics. The old record was 13, which we had going into the final hockey game. We broke that record by getting gold medal #14 with the Hockey win! Days like today remind me how proud I am to be Canadian!! And yes I am half American, but they made it all the way to the gold medal game in mens and womens hockey and won the most overall medals so they should be very proud!!
I am going to miss watching the Canadians take on the other countries and the die hard fans in Vancouver. GO CANADA GO!!!!
