January 31, 2011

My Doctor told me to be at the hospital between 6:00am and 6:30am to be induced. Of course we went so we were there right at 6:00am only to be told by a nurse that we were way early and they weren't ready for us yet. Of course. We watched a movie in the waiting room and at about 7:15am they were finally ready for us.

My doctor was there and after I changed and got on my bed she broke my water first thing! I was 3cms. I didn't even feel her break my water actually. I was expecting the 'gush' that everyone talks about but nothing happened; I had to ask her if she had done it.

Then it took them a while to find a good vein to hook up my IV to. I had my water broken by 7:30am and my IV in by 8:30am. Then we waited.

Chase and I played cards and I started to have some small contractions. As the contractions got worse I now felt the 'gush' of your water breaking. Each contraction brought some more water... Totally gross by the way.

It didn't take long for the contractions to get very strong. They were only a minute apart too. I kept telling Chase that I could breathe through them, and they hurt and everything; but if I just had a little more time to rest in between it wouldn't be too unbearable. The minute break wasn't long enough for how hard they were coming. I got up to a 12 on the drip by myself before asking for pain medicine. The nurse said that was pretty impressive. I have never been in labor myself so I don't know. :)

We decided to ask for morphine. She checked me and I was at 4cm. As she left to go get the morphine the contractions were getting worse and worse, so I told Chase to go out and tell her I changed my mind and I wanted the epidural.

They moved me into the room I would deliver in and called the Anesthesiologist.

He was only going to be 10 mins! Whoo hoo!!!

As he was administering the epidural I would tell him when a contraction was coming on and he would stop while I breathed through it. As he was doing it I was getting very hott and starting to drip sweat. I kept telling Chase and my nurse(whom I LOVE by the way) that I needed some cold wash cloths. They said they would get them after. The last thing I remember is leaning against Chase and closing my eyes, feeling very tired, sweating, and wanting to just pass out.

They laid me down on the bed and I was looking up at Chase when this other Nurse came in and put an oxygen mask on me. I looked over to see what was going on and there was like 6 people in my room all doing things and my doctor checking me as well. They didn't really tell us what was going on and I was so out of it I didn't care. I just figured I was out of it because of the morphine and the epidural but it turns out that my blood pressure dropped significantly, which in turn made Zayah's heart rate drop. My blood pressure got to 85/49.

My doctor had to put a probe in the top of Zayah's head that had a wire coming out of it hooked up to a machine and that's how they monitored her heart rate from then on.

I was now 5cm.

Watching all those people work on me and not knowing what was going on was scary for Chase. He told me that this was the first time he teared up in the delivery room.

After that I rested. I took it easy and they had my blood pressure getting checked every 15 mins. They also gave me a button to push for more pain medicine if I needed it. So every 15 mins when my blood pressure got checked I would push for more medicine. My nurse encouraged it actually, she said its better to be on top of the pain then to have to play catch up and then its too late.
The epidural made me numb on my left side but not on my right side. So I still felt contractions on my right side which was a little weird. They were masked by the epidural a bit and I could breathe through them but they, of course, got more intense and more intense. They finally moved down low and now just started to feel like pressure instead of pain.

at about 2:30pm they told me that since it was all pressure I was feeling and that I was progressing so fast they wanted me to start pushing so they could coach me on exactly where and how to push right. I had progressed 1-2 cm every hour that I was in the hopsital.

I pushed everytime I felt pressure and for the first hour it was not bad at all. I was just doing an exercise. Every contraction, I would breathe and push like clock work and the pressure wasn't too intense yet.

THEN, in the 2nd hour the pressure intensified significantly! I was getting tired of course but I kept going. I would push during the contractions and baby would descend. But in between contractions she would go back up to where she was. I couldn't get her over my pelvic bone.

Finally, at just after 4:00pm, my doctor told me that they were going to try to use the suction vacuum to help baby come out. If that didn't work my other option was to have a C-Section.

As I was pushing, I was so exhausted that after one contraction I looked at Chase crying and told him I couldn't do it anymore. He told me later that this was the second time he teared up.

I told the doctor to just do it and try the vacuum. She got it onto babys head and on the next contraction I pushed with everything I had.

Zayahs head came out. They suctioned out her mouth and nose and then I pushed again and she was out... ALL OF HER!!! Chase looked at me with the most shocked look on his face. This was the third time he teared up.

They had people from the NICU in the room to check baby because ever since my blood pressure dropped her heart rate was not staying very stable. It would drop and then come back up and was all over the place.

As they were checking her, she didn't cry. Which usually would worry them and was worrying me. But, they said she was fine. They checked her lungs and heart and she was perfectly fine. Her eyes were open, she was looking around but she just didn't want to cry. She let out a little cry when they picked her up and that's all they could get.

My nurse told me after that her heart rate was being so funny because her cord was around her neck. I'm glad they didn't tell me until after.

Baby Zayah was born at 4:29pm. She weighed 8 pounds and measured 21 inches long.

She was perfect.
That beautiful baby above is what I got out of it.
Truth be told I went through a lot that day but, my water was broke at 7:30am and baby was out by 4:30pm. So my total time in labor and the hospital wasn't that long. I'm glad.
We love you so much baby girl. Mama is so glad you finally made your debut.

Oh! I just love birth stories. Makes me tear right up. Little Zana (I know, I know! Jim put me up to it!) is so adorable. Sorry about all the labor pains, but the end result is totally worth it! She's so pretty. Tralee's cord was around her neck too. She kept going back up after I pushed as well. That part of the story was similar to what I went through. Hunter just came out with two pushes, so maybe your next labor will be easy as pie! Can't wait to see her newborn pics!

I'm so glad she cooperated and you didn't have to have a c-section. Little zayah is beautiful, I hope you both are getting enough sleep!

I know the feeling of not being able to do it anymore! But after your little baby is out you think holy how the heck did I just do that! She is so cute enjoy her! Congrats on having a easy delivery! they are the best! I don't know what I would do if I had to be in labour for more the 12 hours. My first was only 3 1/2 and my second was around 5. I think If i went over 12 hours i would had had an epidural too! but I will never know...
