10k

September 10, 2011

Nervous. Extremely nervous. Excited. Anxious. That morning I was up early packing a diaper bag, eating a good breakfast at just the right time and making sure I had everything I needed. Water bottles, a snack, etc. Some friends and I decided to participate in the Glenwood Fun Run, which is a 10k or a 5k. This is my first race since I was in high school. And I've been out of school so long now that I don't even think that counts, so it's safe to say this is my first big race. However, I did not have a 'race' mentality. I have been running and training for this but my goal was to just finish. Kimberley was my training buddy and the one goal in the race we did strive for was to keep our kilometre average pace under 9:00 minute. 9 minutes at 10 kms would mean a 10k in an hour and a half. We wanted to do it in less than that. We trained at a faster pace but still walked if we needed to. We would just make sure we walked briskly and not for too long so our muscles wouldn't get cold. This strategy worked very well for us. I'm sure without me as a hinderance Kim could have just gone and ran the whole thing, but she stuck by me all through training and all through the race and I love her for it.

My running buddy Kim and I with our first race grab bag. It had a granola bar, a bottle of water, a wrist band, a t-shirt, and our number for the race.
Ready to go, but I was soooooo nervous!

My baby girl with me on my big day.

Cammi, Kimber, Jessica, Jaclyne, and Jami literally seconds before we stepped over to the start line. 4 out of 5 of us are moms, and 3 of those 4 have had a kid in the last year. Kim's little guy is a year and a half and then Zayah is the next oldest at 7 months. So we had kids in 7 months or less!

On your Mark... get set..... GO!!!

This is Kimber and I just about to cross the finish line! We started at the end of the pack and ended toward the end but the point is, we finished.

Right after we were done! So exhausted!

All of us together at the end!

Race times aren't officially up on the website yet and we didn't go check our times but, Kim and I had our 'runkeeper' app going on the iphone as we were running and we are pretty sure we came in around an hour and 25 minutes! Just under our goal but we did it!

Training now starts this week for my half marathon I am signed up for in December in Las Vegas!

Anyone out there that is a long distance runner please please please send me tips. Eating the days before, shoes that are good to train and run in, breathing tips, a good timing goal for the half. I have never done one and I am sure I will be at the end of the pack but having a good goal to stick to would be nice.

Thanks!
